How Lead Paint Dust
Can Affect Your Children and Its Health Effects
Children are being exposed to lead poisoning and it is still a major environmental health problem in the US. Lead is much more dangerous to children
because they often put their fingers and other objects such as pacifiers into their mouths. If there is lead based
paint on windows, they will eat paint chips or eat soil from outside that is contaminated with lead. It affects
children more because they are still developing. Lead Paint was banned in 1978.
Renovations of a pre-1978 home can release high levels of lead paint dust into
the air. Most contractors do not take the proper precautions before beginning any type of construction in a
home. The new Lead Safety for Renovation, Repair and Painting Law will go into effect on April 22, 2010. This
is designed to protect our children from lead paint exposure. After that date, all Contractors, Handymen or
any worker in your home that does work in a pre-1978 home will need to be certified and trained according to
this new law.
The health effects of lead poisioning are not always obvious. A lot of the symptoms can
be misinterpeted by Doctors or Hospitals. The longer the delay of treating your child for lead poisioning, the more
likelihood of possible permanent damage such as physical or mental damage. This is nothing to fool around with
because of the types of problems it causes such as slowed growth, behavior and learning problems, hearing loss or
headaches.
Lead Paint
If you have a child in a pre-1978 house, it is best to have them take a (BLL) Blood Lead Level Test for Lead
Paint Poisioning to be safe.
In conclusion, it is real easy for children to be exposed to this toxin. They have a tendency to put their hands
into their mouths or eat dirt while outside where the toxic levels could be very high in the soil. If you are
concerned about your child and think they have been exposed to lead paint dust or paint
chips, contact your Doctor immediately.
